Our 2026 Rankings at a Glance

Our methodology hasn't changed: we rank by 5-year total cost of ownership (1 registration + 4 renewals for one .com domain). That's the number that actually matters, not the flashy first-year promo price. We include both affiliate and non-affiliate registrars — Cloudflare and Porkbun pay us nothing and still rank #2 and #4.

#1: Spaceship — $48.80 Over 5 Years

Spaceship remains our top pick for a second straight year. At .98/year for .com renewals, they're actually pricing below the wholesale cost of 0.44 — a strategy that only works because they're subsidized by parent company Namecheap as a customer acquisition tool.

The interface is clean and modern, with no upsells or dark patterns. They support Sedo MLS Fast Transfer for instant domain sales delivery. The main limitation is that they don't offer email hosting or website building — they're a pure domain registrar. For most people, that's a feature, not a bug.

The big question for 2026: will Spaceship absorb Verisign's November price increase or pass it through? Even if they raise prices to 0.69, they'd still be the cheapest option by a meaningful margin.

#2: Cloudflare — $52.20 Over 5 Years

Cloudflare is the only registrar that contractually charges zero markup. You pay exactly the wholesale price, nothing more. When Verisign raises the wholesale to 0.97 in November, Cloudflare will charge exactly 0.97. No guessing, no margin padding.

The trade-off: you must use Cloudflare's nameservers, the interface is built for developers, and there's no phone support. If you're technical and want absolute pricing transparency, Cloudflare is unbeatable. We don't earn anything recommending them — they don't have an affiliate program — but they've earned the #2 spot on merit.

#3: Dynadot — $54.30 Over 5 Years

Dynadot is the domain investor's registrar. They're the only registrar supporting both Sedo MLS and Afternic Fast Transfer networks, which means your domains sell faster regardless of which marketplace the buyer comes through. Their bulk management tools, auction platform, and account push features are industry-best for portfolio management.

For everyday users, the interface is functional but utilitarian — it's built for power users who manage hundreds of domains, not people registering their first .com. Pricing at 0.86/year is excellent and only /bin/sh.42 more than Cloudflare's wholesale rate.

#4: Porkbun — $55.30 Over 5 Years

Porkbun is the crowd favorite on Reddit and developer forums. The interface is the friendliest of the budget registrars, and their human support team is genuinely responsive. Free WHOIS privacy, free SSL, and free email forwarding are included with every domain.

They don't have an affiliate program, which means every time we recommend them, we earn exactly /bin/sh. We still recommend them because they're excellent. That's the SideBySide approach — rankings based on data, not commissions.

#5: Namecheap — $74.41 Over 5 Years

Namecheap's 5-year cost is 5.61 more than Spaceship for the exact same .com domain. The irony is that Namecheap owns Spaceship. You're paying a premium for the Namecheap brand name, their 24/7 live chat support, Domain Vault security, and bundled hosting options.

If you're a beginner who wants someone to hold your hand through DNS setup and email configuration, Namecheap's support is worth the premium. For everyone else, Spaceship offers the same underlying infrastructure at a much lower price.

#6: GoDaddy — $87.97 Over 5 Years

GoDaddy is the world's largest registrar with 91 million domains under management. They're expensive (1.99/year renewals), but they have two legitimate differentiators: 24/7 phone support (rare in this industry) and ownership of Afternic, the largest domain aftermarket network.

If you're a domain flipper who sells primarily through Afternic's network, GoDaddy makes sense despite the premium. Their Fast Transfer integration means domains sell and deliver instantly to buyers. For everyone else, you're overpaying for brand recognition.
